Los Tarantos, flamenco in Barcelona
In 1963 a venue devoted to flamenco opened on Plaça Reial: Los Tarantos. A very authentic place in its day, it brought in great bailaores (dancers) such as Vicente Escudero, Antonio Gades, José de la Vega and María Márquez; great tocaores (guitarists) such as Pepe Pubill, Andrés Batista and Selva de Cádiz; and great cantaores (singers) such as Fosforito, El Brujo, El Peti and Pepe Cortés.
With a long artistic track record as a tablao flamenco (flamenco venue), it was also a school for figures who are well established today. Although the greats no longer pass through, the spirit, the bite and the way of doing things so typical of flamenco certainly do, with second-tier bailaores and cantaores who can sometimes surprise you more than you’d expect.
