Carmen Amaya photography exhibition
La Virreina Centre de la Imatge pays tribute to the extraordinary flamenco dancer (bailaora) Carmen Amaya, as part of the celebrations for the centenary of her death, with the exhibition ‘Carmen Amaya 1963. Fotografies de Colita i Julio Ubiña’ (Carmen Amaya 1963: photographs by Colita and Julio Ubiña).
The exhibition covers the last year of her life through photographs by Colita and Julio Ubiña. The images convey a special strength as well as the reality of certain Barcelona neighbourhoods, such as the Somorrostro neighbourhood, where Carmen Amaya was born and grew up. Some of the images take us onto the set of the film Los Tarantos, by Rovira Beleta.
The exhibition is part of ‘Circuit 2013. Fotografia Documental Barcelona’, which will present a range of documentary photography exhibitions throughout June and July.
‘Carmen Amaya 1963. Fotografies de Colita i Julio Ubiña’ can be visited until 7 July.
