Shunka Japanese restaurant
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Barcelona is in the Gothic Quarter, just behind the cathedral, and it’s called Shunka. Linen curtains cut into strips recall the tradition of the old Japanese food carts that roamed the streets selling food. These had little curtains cut into strips that were used as napkins. The dirtier the curtains, the more famous the cart, because more people had wiped their hands on them. Ever since, good restaurants have hung these curtains in memory of that tradition.
The space isn’t very big, and you can eat at the counter, watching the chefs at work, or at a table. Personally, I prefer the counter if there are two of you. The service is very attentive and it’s reasonable value for money. The house speciality is toro tataki (tuna belly) seared with a blowtorch, although the sushi is exquisite too. Follow the link for more information on Shunka restaurant. And if you’d like to take a short walk around the Gothic Quarter before or after lunch or dinner, I’d recommend the Myths and Legends route.
Don’t forget to book. Bon appétit!
Another excellent Japanese restaurant in the Gothic Quarter is its big brother, Koy Shunka, although it’s considerably more expensive, with prices ranging from €80 to €120 per person.
