Santa Gula restaurant, Barcelona
Aubergines, courgettes, ‘rovellons’ (saffron milk cap mushrooms)… seasonal ingredients and market-fresh cooking are what Santa Gula is all about. It’s in the Gràcia neighbourhood, just a few metres from Diagonal. One of the things that stands out most is that 70% of the menu changes from week to week, depending on the market and the season.
Despite changing so often, the menu is very extensive. We were drawn to the ‘Tempura courgette flowers stuffed with mozzarella, tomato and basil’ and the ‘Sautéed rovellons with butifarra (Catalan sausage) and beans’, both delicious. We’d recommend saving room for the homemade desserts, which are exquisite and beautifully presented; we loved the ‘Apple puff pastry with Cerdanya yoghurt ice cream’.
It’s a cosy, small place with a relaxed atmosphere, where you can go with your partner or with friends. The service is very good and most of the dishes can be shared. They have a wine list, although the house wine (by the glass) is perfectly decent.
As it’s not very big, it’s a good idea to book if you’re going for dinner on a Friday or Saturday. All in all, a good, informal restaurant that I’m planning to go back to with my friends soon.
The average price per person is €30 and, in my personal opinion, it’s pretty good value for money.
They’re open for lunch Monday to Friday and for dinner Thursday to Saturday and on the eve of public holidays. There’s no set lunch menu, but if you decide to have lunch at Santa Gula on a weekday, don’t miss a stroll along Carrer Sèneca.
