The Guantes Victoriano glove shop used to be tucked away among fabrics, with the modest space it occupied and its rather unusual shop window. Neither of them invited you in, unless you already knew this shop for made-to-measure gloves.

Glove sewing machineTop dressmakers order their gloves here, because the person in charge had years of experience. This was Carmen, the daughter-in-law of Victoriano Salgado, who founded the shop some fifty years ago. Between one customer and the next, she would get down to work at her sewing machine.

To make your gloves, she would take the measurements of one of your hands with pencil and paper, you’d choose the type of fabric you wanted, and in a week at the very latest you could go and pick up a pair of gloves made to your taste and measurements for about €80. A good present for a cold Christmas.

Taking the measurements of a hand

Today the shop has moved and passed to a new generation. It’s still descendants of the Salgado family who run the glove shop now, with the same care and all the know-how they’ve inherited.

I’m sure that fabrics and leathers in every colour and style used to cover, and still cover, quite a few hands in Barcelona.

I had my wedding gloves made here! 🙂

By the way, they also cover shoes and purses with the fabric you choose or bring along yourself!
