Natcha patisserie, BarcelonaHeading down Avinguda de Sarrià, just before you reach Josep Tarradellas, on your right you’ll come across Natcha patisserie: a modern, elegant patisserie that draws you in with its big shop window.

Its founder, Isidre, tells us the name is a long story involving a beautiful Russian woman… but its similarity to the name of the Sacha patisserie, which was founded earlier and was very well known at the time, plus the fact that he founded Natcha together with his wife, make me doubt his version of where the name comes from.

Still, Isidre puts everything into making all the cakes and sweets on display. He showed us the workshop behind the shop, where skilled pastry chefs work with top-quality ingredients from 6am to 10am. There’s a big fridge where finished products and some ingredients are kept, and then a freezer that runs at -20°C.

All the pastries are designed to be eaten in a single bite, which makes them harder to make and pushes up the price, but it’s much appreciated if you don’t want to make a mess. They make all kinds of cakes, chocolates, panellets (small marzipan sweets eaten around All Saints’ Day), turrón (Spanish nougat)… and there’s also a little space where you can have breakfast or an afternoon snack.

It’s 55 years old now, Isidre tells us, holding up first one wide-open hand and then the other. It started out on the corner of Carrer Galileu and Carrer Europa. A few years later it moved to where it is now, and that’s what we see today: an artisan patisserie, but a 21st-century one, with delicious products.
